Ruth Roman is the youngest daughter of Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) and Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. She was only a young teenager when her father who worked as an carnival barker, died. Her mother had to work in jobs including waitressing and cleaning. Ruth was a student and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She only attended the school for two years, before going on to pursue an acting career.
